The short answer
What Illinois families should know.
A large production is useful only when someone can connect documents to the questions in the case. Organize Illinois divorce discovery around accounts, dates, disputed issues, and gaps while preserving the originals and any confidentiality restrictions.
Keep originals and a reliable index
Preserve an unchanged copy of each production, including the delivery message, filenames, page numbers, and accompanying response. Work from separate copies when highlighting or making notes. Build an index identifying the source, date received, document type, date range, and production identifier. This prevents a spreadsheet summary from becoming detached from its supporting material. If the production is incomplete or unreadable, record the problem specifically rather than silently filling a gap with an assumption.
Review by issue and by chronology
Sort financial records by account and month, then compare opening balances, transfers, and ending balances. For income, distinguish a pay period from the date a payment arrived and compare payroll records with tax and bank information. For parenting, place communications beside schedules and relevant events rather than presenting isolated screenshots. Maintain a separate list of questions for counsel. Rule 201 permits relevant discovery but also recognizes proportionality and privilege; collecting more material is not always the best next step.
Separate useful summaries from evidence
A working chart can help find a discrepancy, but the chart does not automatically prove the underlying facts at a hearing. Preserve the records and identify witnesses or certifications needed for admissibility. Keep privileged communications and attorney strategy separate from materials that may be produced. When a document appears missing, identify the precise period or category and compare it with the actual request before demanding supplementation. Also maintain a record of later productions so the team can see what changed. An orderly production history makes it easier to correct an honest omission and to establish a persistent deficiency when court relief becomes necessary. Maintain a version index for revised statements and duplicate productions. Mark the authoritative source without deleting earlier versions that may explain a discrepancy or the timing of a disclosure.
