The short answer
What Illinois families should know.
A suspicious signature or inconsistent document deserves careful preservation and investigation. An accusation alone does not establish forgery. The useful questions are where the item came from, whether it is authentic, what changed, and whether reliable testimony or other records can resolve the discrepancy.
Preserve what you received
Keep the file, transmission, envelope, attachments, and any earlier versions. Do not write on the only original or overwrite electronic metadata while making a comparison. Record the source and date received. Identify the specific concern: a signature, an altered amount, a missing page, or a document attributed to an organization that denies issuing it. A precise description allows targeted discovery and prevents an ordinary clerical error from being treated as deliberate fraud without evidence.
Authentication has several possible methods
Rule of Evidence 901 permits authentication through a knowledgeable witness, appropriate handwriting familiarity or comparison, distinctive characteristics, or proof of a reliable process, among other methods. Depending on the dispute, a custodian, transaction record, or qualified expert may be more helpful than visual speculation. Under Rule 1003, a duplicate is generally admissible like an original unless a genuine authenticity question or unfairness requires a different result. That makes the nature of the challenge important; every photocopy is not automatically defective.
Raise the issue through the case
Tell counsel promptly so requests for originals, source records, examination, or court relief can be assessed before a hearing. Ask whether the item has merely been produced or actually offered into evidence. An authenticity objection does not automatically decide relevance, hearsay, or the weight the court should assign. Preserve related records that may support or undermine your concern. Do not alter a comparison sample or manufacture a demonstration. If evidence of intentional falsification develops, counsel can evaluate the appropriate civil or other response without using unsupported accusations as negotiation pressure. If a signature is disputed, preserve comparison samples whose dates and origin can be independently established. If the document purports to come from a bank, employer, or other organization, seek an authorized source copy through proper channels. A comparison with an independently obtained record may resolve the concern.
